Company Overview: Star Africa Corporation Limited is a Zimbabwe Stock Exchange listed conglomerate with interests in sugar refinery and distribution, wholesaling, haulage transport, engineering and tryes manufacturing, packaging, the manufacture of value added sugar products and bottling of carbonated drinks.
I was responsible for human resources management within the haulage transport, engineering and value added sugar products manufacturing business units. These belong to five different NECs and subsectors, that is, Motor Industry, Engineering, Sugar Milling, Food and beverages and Transport. My key achievements include the setting up of a Human Resources function for Arthur Garden, an engineering Business Unit.
As Human Resources Manager, I successfully performed the following:
Strategic Talent Acquisition and Workforce Planning
- Leading the recruitment and selection processes for managerial and senior-level positions to ensure alignment with organizational needs.
- Overseeing and enhancing the induction and onboarding process for new employees to ensure seamless integration into the organization.
- Delegating, directing, and supervising Human Resources Officers to ensure the effective execution of HR functions.
Organizational Policy, Systems, and Compliance
- Reviewing, updating, and aligning human resources policies and procedures with ISO 9001:2000 certification standards and best practices.
- Administering performance contracts and ensuring compliance with the company’s Performance Management System as a key champion of the initiative.
- Overseeing continuous job evaluation activities to ensure job roles remain aligned with strategic business objectives.
- Managing payroll administration and the processing of employee pensions, Social Security, and terminal benefits in line with statutory and policy requirements.
Training, Learning, and Development
- Administering training and development programs, including the identification of training needs and coordination of learning interventions.
- Conducting both pre- and post-training evaluations to assess impact and return on investment.
Employee Relations and Engagement
- Advising company executives on industrial relations matters and other HR-related issues affecting operations and compliance.
- Managing and presiding over disciplinary hearings in accordance with labor law and internal policy.
- Overseeing Workers’ Committee activities and chairing Works Council Meetings to foster transparent employee engagement and communication.
- Addressing employee complaints and grievances promptly and effectively to maintain a positive working environment.
Occupational Health and Safety Leadership
- Serving as the Safety Team Leader, responsible for coordinating and leading monthly safety audits and weekly safety talks.
- Regularly analyzed workforce trends to proactively address potential skill gaps or staffing needs.
- Fostered positive work environment through comprehensive employee relations program.
