Salina De La Rosa

Stationed at a Catholic school that hosts 300 children grades 1-7. Integrated into small rural school community through speaking local language and providing 24/7 service to the children and community. Taught 6th grade English, 4th-7th Arts, 5th-6th Religious and Moral Education, 5th-7th Catechism, and art club.

• Launched the Clean Water Project and raised N$200,000 to install filters for clean water at boys’ and girls’ hostels.
• Fundraised N$20,000 for Books2Africa and received over 1,000 books for school library.
• Managed library and 8 librarians.
• Advanced writing skills by 60% by implementing after-school tutoring every day for one hour after school.
• Trained aspiring artists for art competitions and took first place in 3/3 competitions.

Alternative school that hosts a variety of students: ESL learners, juvenile detention learners, emotionally impaired (EI), cognitively impaired (CI), IEP & 504 plans, and more. Such diversity required strong classroom management, adaptability, and the ability to creatively personalize every lesson and assignment to meet the needs, interests, and capabilities of every student.

• Instilled a love of literature through engaging texts with Notice and Note.
• Cultivated a community of learners through a unique classroom setting and daily routines.
• Improved retention by facilitating instruction in new environments that promote neuroplasticity.
• Conducted two three-week, play-based, rigorous courses to teach The Iliad and The Odyssey for an English credit.
• Partnered with Math teacher and co taught a three-week rigorous English/Math course based on the game show Survivor for both an English and Math credit.
• Mentored student teachers in classroom management, differentiating instruction, and building a community of learners.
• Fundraised over 10 Donors Choose grants to receive books for classroom library.

• Designed and implemented a three-week learning intensive class on health and nutrition.
• Partnered with Science teacher to design and implement a three-week learning intensive class called Unconventional Health.
• Collaborated with health ed. specialists at ISD to determine school health needs and availability of services to develop goals for meeting needs.
• Provided guidance to school Board as the Sex Ed Advisory Board Department Head on assessment of health education needs and on development and delivery of health education programs.
• Created 2 Donors Choose grants to obtain health education materials to enhance learning.

The Samaritans students are 13 refugee students from Central & South America, India, Afghanistan, and/or African. I was their English teacher, summer-school teacher, and after school tutor.

• Built opportunities for real-world language use outside a formal learning environment.
• Immersed in ESL students' culture to guide lessons and build positive relationships.
• Assisted ESL students with developing academic strategies and goal setting to boost confidence by taking ownership of their learning.
• Conferred with superintendent to allow ESL students to play soccer for one hour each day, increasing attendance, scores and their connection to the school and staff.
